Welcome to Sensory Nanny
Having a child with sensory processing difficulties can make family life challenging . . . I know this first-hand. I have the pleasure of being both a pediatric occupational therapist, as well as the mother of 12-year old twin boys, both of which have sensory processing issues. One of my sons has the diagnosis of Asperger's syndrome, and my other son has the diagnosis of autism. With the benefit of seeing sensory issues and autism issues as a clinician, as well as a parent, I have noticed that although there is much information on techniques and programs to help your child, there is very little information on how to help your child and keep your family strong. There is no one “who has been there” to give you guidance or support as you give your child a bath or brush their teeth while they are screaming so loudly that you are sure that the authorities will be called. There is no one there to give you perspective as you have the parent of a "typical" child tell you that "if you would just . . . (I'll let you fill in the blank) . . . then he/she wouldn't act like that". In the midst of trying to do all the therapy, programs, and play groups to "fix" your child . . . you may feel like you are losing something . . . you, along with the rest of your family! There are people available to tell you what you “should do” and what you “need to do” but there is no one to tell you what you really need to hear, which is . . . you are fine, and even though it doesn’t feel like it right now . . . everything will work out. I am here to tell you exactly that . . .Just breathe....You are fine…and everything is going to be ok. Yes, there are therapies, programs and playgroups to help your child, and I hope to be able help you navigate some of that information if needed, but my main interest is in you and your family as a whole! My mission is to help you organize all of the information coming from all directions, and help you and your family find your way.
